32 Internet Fraudsters Convicted in Ibadan as Courts Issue Jail Terms, Community Service, Fines, and Order Forfeiture of Cash, Vehicles, and Gadgets
No fewer than 32 individuals have been convicted for internet fraud by various courts in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convicts were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Directorate, on separate charges of impersonation and cyber-related offenses.
Delivering judgments on Wednesday, Justices Ladiran Akintola, O.S. Adeyemi, K.B. Olawoyin, and G.A. Sunmonu of the Oyo State High Court, alongside Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, sentenced the fraudsters to varying jail terms and community service.
According to a statement by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, all convicts pleaded guilty and were sentenced accordingly.
Justice Olawoyin sentenced Olajide Peter to two years in prison with an option of a ₦500,000 fine, while Ayodeji and Abayomi received one-year sentences or a ₦250,000 fine each. Justices Adeyemi and Akintola sentenced several others to jail terms ranging from three months to one year, with some given the option of fines, while others were sentenced to community service.
Additionally, the convicts forfeited cash, phones, laptops, and vehicles, including various Toyota Camry and Corolla models. One of the fraudsters, Ayobami, was ordered to refund ₦2.5 million to his victim as restitution.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling internet fraud and financial crimes nationwide.
