Buhari Reaffirms Loyalty to APC, Vows to Strengthen Party Amid Defections and Political Realignments
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), vowing to remain a loyal member and support the party’s growth despite ongoing political shifts ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement released Wednesday by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari made it clear that he would never turn his back on the APC, the party that brought him to power for two terms.
“I am an APC member, and I like to be addressed as such. I will try to popularize the party by all means,” he said. Buhari described his presidency as the “highest honor” and emphasized that he seeks nothing more from the party but remains dedicated to strengthening it.
He also praised the APC’s founding fathers for their sacrifices in building a strong political platform, urging members to uphold the party’s democratic values.
Buhari’s statement comes amid major political realignments, including the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). El-Rufai, a close ally of Buhari during his presidency, cited ideological differences and internal crises within the APC as reasons for his departure.
Though Buhari did not mention El-Rufai by name, his firm declaration of loyalty signals his continued support for the APC despite the growing wave of defections and internal party tensions.
