House of Reps Passes Tax Reform Bills for Third Reading After President Tinubu’s Proposal, Governors’ Opposition, and Final Endorsement
ABUJA – The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed four tax reform bills for the third reading. The approved bills include the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Tax Administration Bill, the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, and the Nigeria Revenue Service Bill.
Last week, lawmakers reviewed and adopted the finance committee’s report on the bills before approving its recommendations. The tax reform proposals were initially submitted by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, urging their swift passage.
The bills faced resistance from northern governors, who warned that the reforms could disadvantage their region and called for a fairer implementation. However, in January, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) endorsed the bills after agreeing on an “equitable” VAT-sharing formula. A public hearing was later held to address concerns before the final passage.
