Nigeria Governors Forum Declines to Take Sides on Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers, Citing Commitment to Unity and Policy Focus
The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has declined to take a stance on President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency in Rivers State, emphasizing its role as a non-partisan body focused on unified policies and socioeconomic development.
In a statement on Saturday, NGF Director General Abdulateef Shittu stressed that weighing in on divisive political issues reflects a poor grasp of historical lessons.
Rivers State has faced political turmoil for nearly two years, with tensions between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Sim Fubara, leading to governance gridlock. On Tuesday, Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state House of Assembly for six months, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as sole administrator.
The NGF urged media and the public to be patient, expressing confidence in crisis management mechanisms. It reiterated its commitment to policy-driven governance while avoiding partisan conflicts that could divide its members.
