Nigeria Customs Intercepts $193,000 Hidden in Yogurt Carton at Abuja Airport, Suspect Arrived from Saudi Arabia

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted $193,000 in undeclared cash hidden inside a yogurt carton at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to a statement on Friday by NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, the money was discovered by officers of the Federal Capital Territory Command during a routine baggage check, following credible intelligence.

The suspect, Kamilu Abdullahi Sarina, 40, arrived in Nigeria aboard Ethiopian Airlines Flight 951 from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Customs Area Controller Olumide Adebisi explained that an advanced luggage scan detected unusual density in the suspect’s baggage, prompting a thorough inspection that led to the discovery of the concealed funds.

The seizure violates the Anti-Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, both of which mandate that travelers declare amounts exceeding $10,000. Non-compliance can result in forfeiture, imprisonment, or both.

Following legal protocols, the intercepted money has been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.

Adebisi reaffirmed Customs’ commitment to enforcing financial regulations and warned travelers against attempting to evade currency declaration laws, emphasizing that offenders will face severe consequences.
