Rivers State Customary Court Rules Against Woman Using Ex-Husband’s Surname, Orders Immediate Name Change 11 Years After Divorce
RUMUOGBA, RIVERS STATE – A Customary Court in Rumuogba has ruled that Mrs. Kate Ngbor can no longer use her ex-husband’s surname, 11 years after their divorce.
In Suit No: OCC/9/2021, Chief Sam Ngbor sought a court order to prevent his former wife from continuing to bear his name. After hearing arguments from both parties’ legal representatives—E.O. Erhirhi for the claimant and R.U. Egwenre for the defendant—the court granted the request.
The ruling, which took effect immediately, declares that Mrs. Ngbor has no right to use the name “Ngbor” or “Sam-Ngbor” without the express permission of her ex-husband. The court further directed her to revert to her maiden name or any other name of her choice, except the disputed ones.
This decision, formally issued on June 9, 2014, now bars Mrs. Ngbor from identifying as Mrs. Kate Ngbor or Mrs. Kate Sam-Ngbor in any capacity.
