Lagos Partners with Huawei to Deploy Smart Traffic Cameras for Speed Monitoring, E-Police Enforcement, and Safer Roads
LAGOS – The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Huawei Technologies, has launched four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to enhance traffic monitoring and enforce speed limits.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the development at a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the new installations will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
“These sites are strategically placed to detect and deter overspeeding, a major cause of road accidents,” Osiyemi said. He highlighted two key checkpoint locations: Alapere, Ogudu Road (80km/h limit) and NITEL, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (60km/h limit).
Additionally, two e-police sites at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road will monitor traffic offenses such as running red lights, lane violations, illegal U-turns, and reversing on highways. Offenders will receive SMS notifications detailing violations and fines—N20,000 for running a red light and N50,000 for exceeding speed limits.
“This initiative is not punitive but aims to promote responsible driving, prevent accidents, and create an orderly transport system,” Osiyemi added.
The briefing was attended by Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary Olawale Musa, Huawei representatives, and other key officials.
