Outraged Kogi Women Storm Streets in Oke Ere, Protest Rising Insecurity, Kidnappings and Inaction by Local Authorities After Repentant Kidnapper’s Confession
Aggrieved women of Oke Ere community in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State took to the streets on Wednesday, protesting the persistent insecurity and rampant kidnappings plaguing their town.
Mostly elderly and clad in traditional wrappers, the women marched solemnly, chanting sorrowful songs and pleading for urgent intervention. They described the situation as an “endless reign of terror,” lamenting months of unrelenting attacks, abductions, and killings.
Video footage from the protest showed many of them wailing and expressing deep frustration over the continuous violence. The most recent incident sparking the outcry involved a man who identified himself as a repentant kidnapper. He allegedly confessed to being part of a kidnapping gang operating in the area and named a local resident as a member.
While the named individual denied involvement and was subsequently released, the women voiced concern over the traditional council’s slow response to the matter.
“They believe the traditional rulers are not treating the issue with the urgency it deserves,” a community source told reporters. “They want swift, decisive action to ensure their safety and prevent further bloodshed.”
The women are now calling on the government and security agencies to intervene immediately and bring lasting peace to the troubled community.
