Lagos Set July 12 for Council Elections as LASIEC Flags Off Process for 57 Chairmanship and 376 Councillorship Seats Across 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially scheduled the 2025 local council elections for July 12.
The commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Tope Ojo, announced the date on Friday in Lagos, stating that elections will be conducted for 57 council chairmanship seats and 376 councillor positions. In the event of a tie or dispute, a re-run is slated for July 19.
The elections will cover the entire structure of the state’s local governance: 20 Local Governments, 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards.
Ojo noted that the date was strategically picked to avoid any leadership vacuum as the current tenure winds down. He also revealed that the Notice of Election has been issued, marking the formal commencement of the electoral process.
Political parties are expected to obtain nomination forms at the LASIEC headquarters, with a stakeholders’ meeting involving all registered political parties scheduled for Tuesday. According to Ojo, Election Guidelines will be published on April 17, while campaigns and rallies are permitted from April 18 to July 9.
For candidates being substituted or running unopposed, nomination forms must be submitted between June 18 and June 25.
The LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), assured the public of a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election. She emphasized that all parties must strictly adhere to the electoral timetable for a smooth and transparent process.
