“Religious Diversity Is Not a Threat but a Strength — Let Us Use It to Build Peace and National Progress,” Says Alaafin of Oyo During Coronation Jumat Service
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has urged Nigerians to view religious diversity not as a hindrance but as a valuable asset for national development.
Speaking during a special Jumat and thanksgiving service held on Friday at the Central Mosque in Oyo town, as part of activities marking his coronation, the monarch emphasized the importance of religious harmony in fostering national unity.
This was contained in a statement released on Saturday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Oba Owoade stressed that religious tolerance is both a legal obligation and a social necessity, noting that the world will never be composed of just one religion or culture. He added that interfaith dialogue is non-negotiable, as no society can thrive on religious exclusivity.
“Every faith group has the right to practise their religion freely, provided it doesn’t infringe on the rights of others to do the same,” the monarch said. “Religious harmony in Nigeria can only be achieved through a new model of religious education — one that promotes multi-religiosity and mutual respect, rather than indoctrination.”
He called on religious communities to train their leaders on the need for moderation in preaching and respect for other faiths, urging them to keep sermons within the bounds of decency and modesty.
Highlighting the need to prevent religious violence, Oba Owoade advocated for stronger interfaith dialogue at all levels of governance. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding cultural values and traditions as a symbol of the people’s heritage.
“I will continue to respect the customs, traditions, and religions of our people because that is where true authority lies,” he declared.
Earlier, the Musafat of Oyoland and acting Chief Imam, Abdulazeez Eleyele, advised the Alaafin to always seek divine guidance in his reign and called on the people to pray for his success while promoting peace and development.
The Alaafin was accompanied by members of the Oyo Mesi, ten newly upgraded Baales elevated to Part 2 monarch status, Owoade Royal family members, and the coronation committee led by Chairman Kunle Ogunmola.
