A 26-year-old Moniepoint agent, Yusuf Umar, was on Thursday arraigned before a Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court over the alleged theft of 580 Pi coins.

Umar faces a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft. Prosecuting counsel, Abdullahi Tanko, told the court that the complainant, David Adieza of Passo village, Gwagwalada, Abuja, lodged a report with the police on April 7.

According to Tanko, on April 6, Adieza had handed his cellphone to Umar to assist in opening a Moniepoint account. However, instead of fulfilling the request, Umar allegedly accessed Adieza’s Pi wallet and stole 580 Pi coins.

The offences, Tanko said, contravene Sections 312 and 289 of the Penal Code.

Umar pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Hussein Isah, applied for bail, citing Section 36(5) of the Constitution and Sections 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), assuring the court that his client would not abscond.

Magistrate Olatunji Oladunmoye granted Umar bail in the sum of N500,000, with one surety in like sum. The surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and have a verifiable address.

The case was adjourned to May 7 for hearing.
