WAEC to Hold First-Ever Computer-Based WASSCE for 1.97 Million Candidates, Aims to Enhance Exam Integrity and Combat Malpractice
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that a total of 1,973,253 candidates will participate in the first-ever Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE), set to begin next week.
This disclosure was made by the Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut, during a press briefing at the WAEC National Office in Yaba, Lagos, on Thursday.
Dr. Dangut stated that the 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates will run from Thursday, April 24 to Friday, June 20, across Nigeria. He assured that results will be released 45 days after the conclusion of the examination, while certificates—both digital and physical—will be issued within 90 days.
He noted that the computer-based format was introduced to enhance the conduct of the examination and combat malpractice.
According to him, this year’s enrolment reflects an increase of over 158,000 candidates compared to 2024, with more female candidates (994,025 or 50.37%) than males (979,228 or 49.63%). A total of 23,554 schools registered for the exam.
“The Council has introduced its maiden Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025. It will cover 74 subjects with 196 papers, and over 26,000 senior secondary school teachers will serve as supervisors nationwide,” he said.
Dr. Dangut also revealed a new testing technique aimed at upholding academic integrity: “From this year, no two candidates will receive identical question numbers. It’s part of our shift in test administration.”
He warned against examination malpractice, saying WAEC will strictly enforce rules. “Candidates’ paper variations have been preprinted. Any candidate who attempts to sit for a paper not assigned to them will face the consequences,” he said, calling on parents, schools, and the media to support efforts in curbing malpractice.
To aid preparation, WAEC has launched several digital platforms, including the WAEC E-Study Portal, WAEC E-Learning Portal, and WAEC Konnect, all designed to support students with resources such as past questions, marking schemes, and performance analytics.
Dangut also cautioned against rogue websites, describing them as a serious threat to students’ futures. “Parents are hereby warned to steer clear of these evildoers. WAEC will continue to work with the Nigerian Police Force to track and prosecute offenders,” he said.
Addressing the security challenges in certain regions, Dangut affirmed that WAEC has partnered with the police and state governments to ensure a smooth and secure examination process nationwide.
