Nine people have so far been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, sending panic through the neighborhood.
The affected structure, an old three-storey building, was partially occupied. While the upper floors were vacant, the ground floor housed a popular eatery known as Equal Right Restaurant.
As of 2 p.m., officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were still on site, continuing rescue operations. The survivors, who sustained various degrees of injuries, were initially treated by Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) before being taken to a hospital for further care.
Confirming the rescue effort, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, through the agency’s spokesman, Shakiru Amodu, stated:
“We have been able to rescue nine alive, with no record of death. The victims are currently receiving treatment.”
Adeseye explained that the building, although not under construction, had been unoccupied on its upper floors for an extended period—something she described as a risk factor for collapse.
“Unoccupied buildings tend to lose structural integrity over time. This makes them vulnerable,” she noted.
The exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation as rescue teams work to reach ground zero to confirm if more victims are trapped.
