2027: Peter Obi Should Return to PDP and Pursue Presidential Ticket with Strong Backing – Sowunmi Advises

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has advised former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP to strengthen his chances of clinching the presidency.

Sowunmi, who served as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, made this known on Saturday during an appearance on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On Podcast.

“Looking ahead to 2027, the PDP will open its processes, announce when forms are available, and anyone confident enough can contest,” he said. “If I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and make a strong case for the presidential ticket.”

He emphasized that the PDP, originally conceptualized by the late Alex Ekwueme, holds historical ties to the Southeast and urged the region’s leaders to rally behind Obi.

Sowunmi argued that despite lacking governors’ support or major party machinery, Obi amassed over six million votes in the 2023 election. He noted that with the backing of a solid political structure like the PDP, Obi’s influence could be significantly amplified.

“If the energy and numbers currently following Obi were channeled into the PDP and he emerged as the candidate, I’m confident he would win the South-East, South-South, Christian North, and North Central,” he stated.

However, Sowunmi clarified that his suggestion was purely hypothetical and not based on any current talks between Obi and the PDP.
