Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi has made headlines by turning down a move to Liverpool, opting instead to remain with the Spanish club. Liverpool, who have yet to make any significant signings this summer, were prepared to activate Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause in an effort to strengthen their midfield. The 25-year-old, who has been with Real Sociedad since the age of 12, was initially open to the idea of a move. However, after deliberation and pressure from his current club, Zubimendi decided to stay, securing an improved contract with Sociedad.

Zubimendi’s decision is a significant blow to Liverpool, who were keen on bringing him in as a key part of their squad. The player’s importance to Real Sociedad was underscored by his performances last season and his role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. Despite the attractive offer from Liverpool, the midfielder’s loyalty to his boyhood club ultimately prevailed.

This decision has left Liverpool still searching for reinforcements in midfield as the Premier League season approaches.
