ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu on Thursday said more opposition figures will join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the party’s governors and National Working Committee (NWC) unanimously endorsed him as the sole presidential candidate.
Speaking at the APC National Summit held at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu declared that Nigeria’s democracy allows free political association, adding: “You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when there is no life jacket. I am glad about what we have and I am expecting more to come.”
The President also offered subtle praise to Vice President Kashim Shettima, calling him a key member of his “think-tank team.”
The endorsement, led by 22 governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), signals strong internal unity within the APC. PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma moved the motion, which was adopted by voice vote in the presence of Vice President Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other top APC officials.
Recent defections have bolstered the APC’s ranks, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and six federal lawmakers. Speakers of the Delta and Edo Houses of Assembly, along with other legislators and former council chairmen, also crossed over to the ruling party. In Kano, Senator Kawu Sumaila and some House members left the NNPP for the APC.
Amid opposition murmurs of a new coalition forming around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Tinubu insisted: “It’s one party ruling and driving the aspirations of Nigerians. Where do they stand?”
However, the mass endorsement has triggered criticism from several quarters.
‘Endorsement is Selfish’ — MBF
Dr. Bitrus Pogu, President of the Middle Belt Forum, described the endorsement as “sycophantic and driven by selfish interests,” citing the worsening economy and security challenges.
‘Nigeria Sliding into One-Party Rule’ — INC
Ijaw National Congress President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, said the trend of defections and endorsements is pushing the country toward a one-party system, warning of democratic decline.
‘Focus on Governance, Not Endorsements’ — Afenifere
Afenifere spokesman, Mr. Justice Faloye, said the endorsement was expected but urged the APC to “focus on delivering the dividends of democracy.”
‘A Sign of Panic’ — CUPP
The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) condemned the move as a panic response, not a reflection of the public’s will. National Spokesperson Chief Peter Ameh said: “This decision appears driven by fear of electoral rejection amid economic hardship.”
He added: “The 2027 elections will be a defining moment, and Nigerians will ensure their voices are heard.”
