Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced the signing of a comprehensive Health Insurance Executive Order yesterday.

In a similar move, the Ogun State government introduced a health insurance scheme targeting the formal sector, including civil servants, public servants, and employees in the organized private sector.

During a press briefing in Lagos, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, outlined the key provisions and objectives of this transformative policy. He emphasized that the initiative aims to significantly improve health outcomes for Lagos State residents.

Abayomi stated: “The initiative aligns with the National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, which mandates state-level social health insurance to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Social health insurance, widely practiced in various forms, offers numerous socioeconomic benefits by pooling contributory funds and spreading risk across a large group, thereby minimizing individual financial exposure and enhancing protection.”

Similarly, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, speaking at the official launch of the scheme held at the Obas Complex, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, announced that his government would cover 50% of the premium for every worker who registers on the scheme.

Represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Abiodun reassured public servants, stating: “I hereby reaffirm that the well-being of public servants will remain a priority in the government’s development agenda, as demonstrated by our payment of a N100 million counterpart fund.”
