The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has apologized for the delay in the administration of the English Language Paper 2 during the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the exam was eventually conducted on Wednesday evening. In a statement released by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the council said it faced serious challenges while working to safeguard the integrity of the exam.
“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper,” the statement read.
WAEC acknowledged the inconvenience caused to candidates, schools, and parents, and expressed regret over the delay.
“We recognise the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this decision on candidates, their schools and parents, and we sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused,” it stated.
Despite achieving its objective of preventing exam leakage, the council admitted that the delay affected the smooth running of the examination.
“In spite of our best efforts, we encountered logistical hurdles, security concerns and socio-cultural factors that negatively influenced our operations,” it added.
WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding high standards in exam administration and pledged to continue promoting academic excellence.
