There was a dramatic scene on Friday at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, Kogi State, when a man identified as Adamu Muhammed Tenimu reportedly fainted upon receiving the news that his wife had given birth to a set of triplets.
According to eyewitnesses, Tenimu, who is currently unemployed, was overwhelmed with emotion after learning that his wife had delivered three baby girls. He collapsed moments after the announcement but was quickly revived by hospital staff and sympathisers.
The mother and her newborn daughters, weighing 1.8kg, 2.0kg, and 2.3kg respectively, are said to be in stable condition and are currently under observation at the hospital’s neonatal unit.
Speaking to reporters after regaining consciousness, Tenimu expressed both joy and distress, noting the financial pressure the unexpected triple birth has placed on his struggling family.
“I thank God for this miracle, but I am confused and sad. We only prepared for one baby. Now, I don’t even have the money to buy diapers or pay the hospital bills,” he said tearfully.
He explained that the pregnancy was not regularly scanned due to financial constraints, which led to the surprise birth of the triplets.
Concerned witnesses and family members have since called on the government, NGOs, religious bodies, and kind-hearted Nigerians to assist the family with baby supplies, medical needs, and financial support.
“This family needs urgent help,” a relative said. “We urge the Kogi State Government and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to intervene.”
A colleague, Mr. Nuhu Alhassan, described Tenimu as a hardworking and law-abiding man, calling for public support to ease the family’s burden. Another well-wisher, Sikiru Olamide, added, “The joy of childbirth should not be overshadowed by the fear of survival. We must rally around this family.”
Mobilisation efforts have already begun, with friends and well-wishers encouraging citizens to contribute in any way they can.
