The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a full investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 22 athletes from Kano State.
Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmed Umar, the Zonal Commanding Officer for Jigawa, Kaduna, and Katsina, disclosed this on Monday during a condolence visit to the Kano State Government House.
NEWS REVIEW reports that the fatal crash occurred just a few kilometres from Kano, as the athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
Describing the incident as “a devastating and tragic loss not just to Kano State, but to the entire country,” Umar revealed that the FRSC had commenced an in-depth investigation into the cause of the crash. He said the young athletes had performed exceptionally at the competition before their untimely death.
“These athletes were on national duty, promoting unity through sports, when this heartbreaking tragedy struck,” he stated.
Umar identified the accident scene as a long-standing blackspot and called on both state and federal authorities to urgently address such danger zones. “At whatever cost, we must take decisive actions to prevent this kind of loss. We cannot keep losing lives this way,” he said.
He urged FRSC officials in Kano to be more proactive and to continually advise the state government on traffic hazards and dangerous road conditions.
While commiserating with the government and people of Kano, Umar reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to collaborating with the state in ensuring safer roads.
Responding, Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, who represented the state government, expressed gratitude to the FRSC for the visit and solidarity. He described the tragedy as one of the darkest moments in the state’s recent history.
“It is a huge and tragic loss. These were our athletes, returning from representing Kano in a national event, and they were so close to home,” Gwarzo said.
He assured that the government would support the victims’ families and work closely with the FRSC to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“This is a wake-up call for all stakeholders. We must work together to protect lives,” he added.
The tragedy has sparked national grief and renewed attention on the state of Nigerian highways, especially routes known for recurring fatal crashes.
