The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has ordered MainPower Electricity Distribution Company to refund over 20,000 customers who were overbilled in April 2025.
This directive was contained in a statement released on Monday and signed by EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, and the Commissioner for Market Operations, Reuben Okoye. The commission said the order came after a detailed investigation uncovered widespread violations in estimated billing practices by MainPower.
“The commission has issued an Order to MainPower to refund the affected customers the overbilled units for energy consumed in April 2025,” the statement read.
According to EERC, the list of affected customers has been published on its website, and MainPower is expected to complete the refunds before the July 2025 billing cycle. Any delay will attract a daily fine of N500,000, as provided under the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023.
The commission revealed it had been monitoring MainPower’s billing methods since October 2024 and had issued several warnings, which the company failed to act on. The situation worsened, with the rate of billing violations rising from 24% in February and March to 34% in April 2025.
