The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has assured residents of Guzape and Kpaduma communities that they will be promptly and fairly compensated for properties affected by the ongoing road construction in the area.

Wike gave the assurance on Monday during a meeting with traditional rulers and representatives of the affected communities in Abuja. He said the meeting was convened to address delays in relocating villagers living along the road corridor earmarked for development.

Expressing concern over the continued presence of residents on the construction path, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and fairness.

“No one will be displaced unjustly,” Wike said. “This is about building a better Abuja for all. We will ensure your people are properly compensated and given legal documents for their new homes.”

He directed the Director of Resettlement to re-evaluate the cost of resettling the affected residents and ordered a 100 percent increase in compensation rates. “If they are supposed to get N50, give them N100,” he added.

Wike clarified that compensation would be limited to structures on the designated road corridor, not the entire communities. He also promised prompt issuance of Right of Occupancy for new resettlement areas.

The minister acknowledged the emotional ties residents have to their ancestral lands and appealed for their understanding, stressing that the road project is vital to the FCT’s development plan.

In response, traditional leaders led by the Sa’peyi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga-Kupi, praised Wike’s transparency and direct engagement. Nga-Kupi noted the potential benefits of the road project and pledged the communities’ support for the resettlement process.

“We are grateful for the minister’s assurance and the respect shown to our people. We will support this effort in the interest of peace and progress,” he said.
