The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, announced the interception of 2,290 used tires along the Saki Axis in Oyo State. Dr. Ben Oramalugo, the Customs Area Controller, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday.

He explained that the tires were concealed in DAF trucks and seized during a Monday operation as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of prohibited items, thereby safeguarding public safety and protecting the Nigerian economy.

Oramalugo detailed that the used tires were uncovered during a routine stop-and-search operation by the command. The contraband had been hidden in the truck in an attempt to evade detection by law enforcement.

He stressed that the importation and smuggling of used tires into the country is illegal, posing a significant risk to public safety due to their worn-out condition. The Oyo/Osun Customs head emphasized that the seizure underscores the importance of the command’s continuous surveillance and intelligence efforts.

Oramalugo praised the vigilance and dedication of the officers, whose tireless work led to the successful interception. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring that only legitimate goods are allowed into the country and vowed to intensify efforts to combat smuggling on all fronts.

He also issued a stern warning to smugglers and those involved in the illegal trade of prohibited items, stating that the command would not relent in bringing offenders to justice and protecting the nation’s borders.

The CAC reiterated the command’s dedication to shielding the public from the dangers of substandard and smuggled goods. He added that the command would continue collaborating with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the effective enforcement of customs regulations.
